How to Sample the Pond Water

When taking a water sample, always pull the water from at least 12” below the top of the pond water and test the sample within 30 minutes of pulling it from the pond.

Frequency of Testing

After initially opening your pond in the spring, it is recommended that the pond be tested weekly for the first 4 to 6 weekly.  During this time the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate may increase dramatically because the pond needs to re-establish its biological filter.  If the ammonia or nitrite rise above the levels indicated below, a 25% - 50% water change is recommended.  Once the biological filter is established the pond can be tested monthly.  However, if you are noticing sick fish or unusual smells, test your pond water immediately.
